Our Commitment

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Chicago Children’s Choir was created in 1956 as a direct response to civil unrest in our city. Our founder, Reverend Christopher Moore, believed that the Choir would be a peaceful force to combat injustice by providing a way for diverse young people to build authentic relationships and unify in their common humanity. Today, CCC stands in solidarity with our singers, families, staff members and communities of color as they continue to experience the trauma of oppression. We unequivocally assert that Black Lives Matter. In response to systemic racial injustice in Chicago and around the world, CCC reaffirms our commitment to the entire Choir family: amplifying bold voices for positive change, strengthening shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of empathetic leaders and supporting safe and informative spaces to further educate and act in response to systemic racism and end continued injustices.

“My time at Chicago Children’s Choir opened my eyes to the power of non-traditional education and race.”

— Joshua Travis, CCC alum

“In a world that's full of so much hurting and hate, it's reassuring and powerful to know that there are people who are trying their hardest to change other's perspective on life through a creative and effective platform. I thank the conductors and staff that have supported me to become the best artist and person that I can be. And to my peers for showing me that you're never too young to set a precedent.”

— Ashley Franklin, Voice of Chicago alumna

Reichardt 2 edit.jpg

Joyce E. Stralow Reichardt (1937-2017)

Music gives a soul to the universe,
wings to the mind,
light to the imagination,
and life to everything

– Plato *

For Joyce, investing her life in performing and teaching music meant investing in the future. She was a gifted contralto soloist – first with the Northern Illinois University Concert Choir in the 1950s, then professionally with two San Francisco Bay choirs in the 1970s. She directed church choirs and K-12 student performances as a classroom music teacher in California, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. That over 40-year repertoire included concert and swing choirs and musical theater.

Returning to Illinois in 1983, Joyce was drawn to Chicago Children's Choir concerts and thus to CCC's mission. It became her dream to extend her love for children and music in order to assist enabling teaching, performing and foundation building for thousands of Chicago children still to be embraced by CCC. In the mid-2000s, together with her husband and daughter, she secured that pledge with The Joyce E. Stralow Reichardt and Kyrsten E. Downing Fund to benefit CCC through our family Trust. The estate legacy was designed to pass to CCC upon the three of our deaths.

Joyce's own future came to be shaped by Alzheimer's Disease. Now it was important to her that the fund also benefit CCC's mission today, supporting the thousands of children whose futures are currently being shaped through music. While maintaining the estate legacy design, two years after her death Kyrsten and I were able to provide the 2019-20 down payment on what will be annual gifts during our own lifetimes.

*In the spirit of the Plato quotation engraved on our family tombstone, and in appreciation for Josephine Lee, the entire CCC staff and board, and for the children being shaped by music's soul, wings, light and life through CCC — the Fund is our thanks in Joyce's behalf.

– Kyrsten E. Downing and Kurt A. Reichardt TR
